Recorded the same day as the Spirits/Witches & Devils session, this is a somewhat surprising archival find. When it was releases, some people seemed to find it very disappointing, but I always thought it was fucking fascinating. Ayler doubles on tenor and soprano here, and plays a set entirely devoted to traditional tunes, but it's a pretty revelatory session. Although it doesn't go very out, it showcases Ayler's old-timey tone on soprano (sounds more like a c-melody with its big quivery voice) and sets up a framework that he would take apart subsequently. Themes in this music would be revisited time and again in Ayler's later work, but this feels like his heart-felt tribute to these roots, and it's mesmerizing.
