Fourth and final album for ECM, this catches the AEC in what feels like another transition. Recorded in Ludwigsburg in June 1984, the quintet plays a more inside game this time. Jarman's opening piece -- dedicated to the first black officer to serve in the British Army -- has a feel that is almost like British chamber jazz (which may or may not be the point), and the rest goes all over the place, but gently. From pieces more like Bowie's subsequent solo work, to lighter massed improvs. Dedicated to the memory of Jo Harting, who was killed in the same car accident as Colin Wallcott. Personnel: Lester Bowie, Joseph Jarman, Roscoe E. Mitchell, Malachi Favors Maghostuf, Famadou Don Moye Catalogue Number: ECM-1273 Grading Notes: cc
